Engagement
Driving engagement with a GP Commissioning consortium is the key element to success. The alternative, that all the work falls upon the Board, is simply not a viable way to function as you cannot hope to drive meaningful outcomes.
In terms of gaining, driving and maintaining engagement the role of the Board lies in continually selling Commissioning ideas, along with all the levers and incentives, to all practices, on an ongoing basis. (please also see our section for the Local Incentive Scheme)
While the Board will always know what they are working on a failure to communicate this, on an ongoing basis, to member practices is likely to lead to them believing either nothing is happening or that somebody else has taken responsibility for PBC and they can therefore play a passive role.
At Scott McKenzie Consultancy we have a simple process to gain, drive and maintain engagement within all member practices.
The process builds month on month to deliver robust and sustainable decision making and outcomes, all focused upon the key drivers of;
•Improving health and reducing health inequalities
•Improving the quality of service offered to patients
•Improving equity of the services available
•Improving the health and wellbeing outcomes achieved by patients
•Embracing the principles of cost effectiveness and improving value for money; in order to ensure delivery of an overall budget efficiency
Working in this way, in this order, we ensure we drive up quality and balance that against remaining within the available resources. Improving our overall demand (outpatients, elective and non elective admissions) and the improved quality, patient outcomes and budget efficiency will give the consortium, freed up resources which can be re-invested in services for patients.
